We have created an easy drop-off system that permits for a swift and convenient routine. Parents are always welcome to join us in the classroom for as long as they would like. However, we know many of you have other children in the car or need to utilize your time in different ways. We are happy to welcome your little one to school by meeting you at your car with our sign-in sheet in order to assist in expediting your day!
Welcome to Sequoia Preschool! Children will learn to independently remove their shoes and coats and put them away in our cubby/coat closet area.
Children have free time to play with an assortment of toys, kitchen and dress-up, railroad tracks, puppetry, etc.
At morning circle time, we sing our bilingual welcome song, talk about the days of the week, months, and seasons and then sing our daily corresponding songs. We discuss the weather, do our Sunrise Salutation yoga stretches, talk about classroom jobs, and read our Special Person chart (which changes weekly). We introduce the letter(s) of the week, introduce new units, and demonstrate how to use new shelf materials.
Class time is when the fun starts! Children independently move at their own pace to explore shelf work from a variety of subjects:
practical life, science, sensorial, math, language, art, geography, cultural awareness, music and movement, and more. For more details on these subjects please see the curriculum section.
Sequoia students are encouraged to work together as well as independently. They are taught to be responsible for their space and to clean up after themselves. This instills a sense of self-responsibility, confidence, and self-esteem. During class time, the teachers guide children to explore new areas, teach lessons, and maintain a harmonic flow in the classroom.
There is a snack table set-up and the children are free to get a snack whenever their tummies tell them to. The children serve themselves the allotted amount of snack for that day by themselves, pour their own drink, enjoy the company of a friend, and then clean up after themselves. Clean up includes putting their food and garbage in the proper receptacles, washing their dishes, and wiping off the table so it's ready for the next person. Each snack will consist of two foods from either a fruit/veggie, protein, or grain category. All of our fruits and veggies are organic as well as many of the other snack options.
In addition, there is often food available for cutting and serving in our practical life section of the classroom.
During this circle time we discuss the current week's subject of learning, whether it be related to: Science, Spanish, Music and Movement, Drama, and/or Cultural Awareness. Songs are regularly included, along with story time, and occasionally show and tell. The children are encouraged to be engaged and interactive to promote self confidence.
We'll be having big fun while working on gross motor skills like running, jumping, hopping, climbing, and balancing. Children will also be growing their communication and social skills through imaginative play and games.
Children gather up their art and belongings and head to the front porch for dismissal.
Similar to arrival time, we are striving for a smooth and convenient pick-up routine in which parents can line up in their cars and staff will escort student to their cars as they arrive.
See you again soon, for another fun-filled day of learning at Sequoia Preschool!
